Good design is as little design as possi…

Good design is as little design as possible.

  1. I watched that movie too about three weeks ago. It is a must see! I too fell instantly in love with that phrase. I try to remember all of Dieters rules, but it was the last one that stuck: I’ll help everyone by providing the complete list of rules by Dieter Rams:

    Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
    Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
    Good design is unobtrusive.
    Good design is honest.
    Good design has longevity.
Good design is consequent down to the last detail.
    Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible. (So wenig Design wie möglich)

I’m not a designer per se, but I work as a professional programmer and it maps directly to software design as well. Dieter Rams is too pro!

    1. Thanks, hkon! Everyone who works is a designer, really. It’s great that you can put his principles to use, too. I used Rams’ rules as a 15-minute “lightning talk” about design at the Automattic offsite last October, and told my many colleagues who are software engineers the same thing. :)
